The National Road Commons downtown park is home to Springfield's celebrated Madonna of the Trail. One of 12 such statues commissioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution along the National Old Trails Road — from Maryland to California — Springfield's was the first to be dedicated, on July 4, 1928.
